TiVo Announces Adapter for Cable Switched Digital Video

TiVo has announced that it will provide an adapter in 2008 that will allow its HD DVRs to access Switched Digital Video (SDV) channels according to TWICE on Monday.

The device was developed in cooperation with CableLabs, the research arm of the cable companies, and the cable companies themselves.

Some cable companies, squeezed for bandwidth on a single 75-ohm coaxial cable as high definition TV emerged, and the competition with satellite providers has heated up, have turned to the SDV technlogy that allows them to push only the channels that viewers are watching instead of every possible channel they supply. However, the potential problem with the current Tivos has been recognized, namely the unattended channel changing for the SDV box that the cable companies plan to supply.

The adapter from TiVo will allow TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD DVR owners to continue to automate the process of selecting and viewing or recording all the channels they are authorized to receive via their Cable Cards. The adapter will work with any Unidirectional Digital Cable Ready Product (UDCP) that has a USB connector and necessary firmware, according to TiVo.

The adpaters are expected to be available in 2Q 2008. Cable operators and TiVo plan to work together to make customers aware of the device. It will only be required in those areas and with those operators who roll out SDV.
