TiVo Announces Lower Cost "TiVo HD DVR"

TiVo announced its long awaited, lower cost "TiVo HD DVR" on Tuesday. The US$299 unit is available for pre-order and is scheduled to ship in August. It has most of the features of the original TiVo Series 3 priced at US$799.

"TiVo HD extends the TiVo experience to an even wider audience than ever, giving sports and entertainment enthusiasts the ultimate companion to their HDTV set," said Tom Rogers, CEO and President of TiVo. "It is the ultimate media centerpiece for the living room with the broadest selection of broadband content, right alongside your favorite broadcast and cable programs, giving HDTV viewers more choice and control than they’ve ever had before. And it can be used in place of the customer’s existing cable box."

TiVo HD DVR

The new TiVo has a slightly smaller hard disk, 180 GB, compared to the Series 3. It offers 20 hours of HD storage or 180 hours of SD storage. It has dual tuners and is set up to use two CableCARDs. It can output video in 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i.

As with the previous TiVo Series 3, which is still for sale, it is not compatible with satellite TV systems. The new TiVo is missing a few features compared to its big brother: a smaller disk, no OLED display and no backlit remote.

The new TiVo HD DVR is exactly what TiVo customers have been waiting for. With potential discounts and the compatibility with Cable TV systems, the HD and DVR revolution should really take off now.

The TiVo HD DVR is scheduled to ship in August and pre-orders are being taken. It is priced at US$299.00.
