Toshiba May Be Ready to Axe HD DVD

The ailing HD DVD format may meet its demise sooner than many expected if reports that Toshiba plans to throw in the towel are true. One unnamed source is claiming that Toshiba could make an announcement within weeks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"An announcement is coming soon. It could be a matter of weeks," the source said.
Toshiba’s HD DVD format has taken several serious blows over the past few months as film studios announced support for the competing Blu-ray format instead, and retailers including Best Buy and Woolworths have openly voiced support for Blu-ray. The popular movie rental companies Netflix and Blockbuster chose to support Blu-ray over HD DVD, as well.
Toshiba’s HD DVD format has been bleeding away supporters lately, but still has Microsoft in its camp. Neither company has commented on the potential demise of movie disc format.
