UK College Gives Away 250 iPod nanos to Students

South Kent College in Dover, England has given away 250 iPod nanos to students for use listening to podcasts of lectures. The school spent £25,000 (US$47,093) on the purchase, which a group called Campaign for Real Education called "a scandalous waste of taxpayers money," according to a BBC report.
Assistant principal Josh Coleman defended the move, saying that it was paid for with money saved from a building project and that the MP3 players would only be given to students who had completed all their assignments and had 100% attendance. IT, motor vehicle engineering and childcare courses are slated to be the first to be podcast.
Mr. Coleman noted: "At first people thought I was giving iPods out to get people through the door, but they can now see the long-term merits. As we attract more full-time students, that generates income which will offset initial outlay, and their wages will go up."
