Universal to Launch Movie Download Service
Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Universal Pictures is getting ready to launch a digital movie download service in Britain on April 10. The service, according to Reuters, will let consumers download a version formatted for their computer, a second version formatted for portable players, and then receive a DVD in the mail.
Universal's service more closely matches the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) in that users get to keep the movies they download. The iTMS, however, does not yet have feature-length films.
Lovefilm, Universal's U.K. partner, will manage the download service through its own Web site, and through AOL. Each movie will be copy protected using Microsoft's DRM software, limiting the service to Windows users. In contrast, music and videos downloaded from the iTMS are compatible with both Mac and Windows computers.
Each movie will sell for 19.99 (about US$34.80), and includes both downloadable versions as well as the DVD.
