WSJ: Netflix Will Offer Internet TV Box

Netflix and Korean Electronics manufacturer LG will combine to market an LG-branded box in 2H/2008 that will allow customers to download Netflix movies and view them on their TV, according to the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. [Subscription required.]
The joint effort comes at a time when Apple’s own Apple TV has been struggling due to limited selection of videos. [As well as no HD content.]
According to Nick Wingfield at the WSJ, few details have been divulged on the product. Insiders suspect that the LG box will also be able to play both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. Currently LG already makes a stand-alone player that supports both formats and sells for US$799, and that device could be the basis for the new product.
While Netflix already offers a PC-only service, with 6,000 titles, whereby customers can stream movies as part of their regular subscription, the company doesn’t see it as the whole solution.
Financial details were not disclosed. Neither was there any mention of HD downloads.
Whether this LG box, which may not be so cheap, is just another stab in the dark or a path to a better way of delivering movies -- as well as considerable Apple TV competition -- will take a long time to sort out since the the availability is slated for the second half of 2008.
