Wal-Mart Joins Best Buy: Refund for HD DVD Players

Wal-Mart has joined Best Buy in offering refunds for HD DVD players according to the Wall Street Journal. Customers must have their sales receipt.

The purchase must have been made after November 1, 2007 and the unit must be returned by April 30, 2008. While the original receipt is required, the original packaging is not.

The article noted that Best Buy is accepting HD DVD units and movie discs regardless of where they were bought, but customers don’t get a full refund. Best Buy makes an offer, and if accepted, will send the customer a shipping label. The going price for an HD DVD movie is US$2.70.

It’s not likely Wal-Mart and Best Buy would be making these offers unless they were somehow making a little money instead of handing out money for obsolete products. However, while the behind-the-scenes financial details haven’t been revealed, some believe that the parts are being rolled back into "upconverting DVD" players and sold overseas.
