Walt Mossberg Comments on iPod nano Features and Flaws
Wednesday, October 5th, 2005 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Walt Mossberg loves his iPod nano, despite the scratches. In his latest Wall Street Journal column, He states that he is pleased with his nano, but notes that it scratches far too easily.
Mr. Mossberg said that his iPod nano is "the best combination of beauty and functionality of any music player I've tested," but also notes that after a month of normal use, it is badly scratched.
By comparison, the other iPods he has used, along with his Treo smart phone, have held up quite well under similar conditions. He recommends that nano owners use a case to protect their iPod, which is something he hasn't done before now. Although a case will help to protect the iPod's screen, it detracts from the overall beauty of the device.
Apple's Phil Schiller told CNN that the problem with scratches is limited to a small group of iPod nanos, and they plan on replacing those units. The nano's clear coating, he said, is the same one used on 4th generation iPod models, and should provide the same level of protection.
Mr. Mossberg sums up by saying "I believe Apple should include a strong, thin case with every nano, starting as soon as possible. And Apple should research some sort of tougher coating for future nano models."
