Warner to Team With Apple For Albums on DVD?
Sunday, August 6th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Warner Music Group plans to bundle albums with videos, song remixes, ring tones, photos, and other media on DVDs, and is working with Apple to apply digital rights management (DRM) to the music, according to the Wall Street Journal (subscription required). Reporter Ethan Smith said that the move is part of an attempt to move away from the CD format that was introduced in 1982.
According to Mr. Smith, the DVD would include "pre-ripped" tracks that would be lower quality than the other audio, which will automatically play when the disc is inserted in a DVD player or a computer's DVD drive. Apple would apparently digitize the tracks with its Fairplay DRM, making them "essentially identical to those the computer company sells through its iTunes Music Store service." However, Apple has until now refused to license Fairplay to anyone else.
The record industry has tried in recent years to move on from traditional CDs with the introductions of Super-Audio CD (SACD), DVD-Audio, and DualDisc, which offers a CD on one side and a DVD on the other. All have met with lackluster reception from consumers, leading one analyst to say of the new DVD albums: "Is it going to be a big deal? I tend to think not, given the failures of previous high end formats. But I don't think it's a bad thing."
