Who Guitarist Townshend Sees ‘Terrible Trouble’ For iPod Users’ Hearing
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Guitarist Pete Townshend, one of two surviving members of the original The Who and a successful solo artist, recently warned visitors to his Web site of the "terrible trouble ahead" for iPod users' hearing.
According to an Associated Press article, he acknowledged that his own hearing damage came from the use of headphones, not from the loud volume of his band's concerts. Now he must take breaks between recording sessions and allow his ears to recover.
"I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal components deaf," Mr. Townshend wrote. "Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it cannot be repaired."
He added: "The downside may be that on our computers -- for privacy, for respect to family and co-workers, and for convenience -- we use earphones at almost every stage of interaction with sound."
