Wireless Group Talks to Apple About Bluetooth-Enabled iPods

The wireless technology group Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) has talked to Apple about installing its chips in future iPods, giving the devices Bluetooth capability without the need for an external adapter. Damian Reece reports for The Independent that such a feature would enable wireless headphone use out of the box and could enable easier iPod use in cars, given the fact that car manufacturers have started integrating Bluetooth in vehicle dashboards.
CSR's market share in the Bluetooth market is now 56%, according to Mr. Reece, and its chips are showing up in over 60% of the new devices integrating Bluetooth technology. The entire market is expected to produce 270 million Bluetooth chips this year, nearly twice as many as the 140 million supplied in 2004.
CSR finance director Paul Goodridge told the reporter that higher capacity Bluetooth chips are currently in the pipeline and "will also shortly be available, further expanding the market."
