Zune Having No Effect on iPod Sales

The Microsoft Zune has captured 9 percent of the MP3 player market with disk drives according to a report by NPD market research. However when included in all MP3 sales, including flash memory players, the total drops to 1.9 percent. This was reported in the San Jose Mercury News on Thursday.

Apple's share of the overall MP3 player market, 62.2 percent, remains unchanged from a year ago. New versions of the iPod nano and iPod shuffle have revitalized the sales for those products. The 2G shuffle doubled its sales year over year and the sales of the 2G iPod nano grew 37 percent, year over year.

The Mercury News analyst suggested that "Microsoft may have misread the market..." and pointed to Amazon sales where the brown Zune is ranked #192 and the white Zune is ranked #312. The Black Zune is the best seller of the Microsoft trio, ranked #47, far behind the Creative ZEN ranked at #27.

The number one seller is Apple's black 5G 30 GB iPod.
