Zune Price Axed to $199 Ahead of Apple Media Event
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Microsoft dropped the price of the Zune media player from US$249 to $199 Wednesday morning ahead of Apples "The Beat Goes On" media event. Although the timing seems more than coincidental, Microsoft claims it is just that.
Cesar Menendez said on the Zune Insider blog "Its part of the normal product life cycle, something weve had on the books for months."
The Zune includes 30GB of storage, and its previous $249 price matched Apples 30GB iPod. Microsoft originally planned to sell its iPod competitor for $300, but dropped the price ahead of the product launch to match Apple.
The new price reduction may also be an indication that Microsoft is preparing to introduce new Zune models. Images recently surfaced showing new player designs along with a smaller flash memory-based model.
So far, the Zune has not been able to gain traction against Apples ubiquitous iPod media player, nor has its Zune Music Service been able to make a dent in the iTunes Store.
