AdMob: Apple iPhone #1 Smartphone for Web Traffic
Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at 4:42 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Apple's iPhone was the #1 smartphone used to access the Web throughout the world, and it was responsible for almost half of all Web traffic from smartphones in the U.S. during the month of February, according to a new report from AdMob.
The report was generated from data collected and analyzed from 6,000 Web sites for which AdMob sells and serves advertising for mobile devices. The company issues monthly reports based on this traffic, and offers analysis of the data to break down traffic by OS, handset, carrier, region, and other related categories.
In February, Apple's iPhone was responsible for some 49.5% of the Web traffic from smartphones in the U.S., despite the company's position as only the #3 smartphone vendor. This would suggest that iPhone users in the U.S. are more apt to use their phones for Web surfing than users of devices from RIM, Palm, or other companies making devices that run Windows Mobile.
RIM, the #1 smartphone vendor in terms of sales in the U.S., saw its BlackBerry line generate some 21% of Web traffic, while Windows mobile at 13% beat out Palm's 7% and Google Android at 5%. Like Apple's iPhone, Google has only one device, the HTC Dream (or G1), and while the G1's share of Web traffic was small, at 5%, that represents a 66% jump from January's 3%.
Worldwide, where the iPhone lags far behind Nokia's Symbian OS smartphones, the iPhone still represented some 33% of all Web traffic from smartphones, behind Nokia with 43% share, and far ahead of RIM's 10%, Windows Mobile's 7%, and Palm's 3% share. That said, the iPhone's 33% share was enough to make it the #1 single device, as Noki's total share is spread among more than a dozen individual devices running the Symbian OS.
