Alpine Racer Hits the iPhone; Watchmen MMOG on the Way

Namco Networks on Monday released the 3D skiing game Alpine Racer for iPod touch and iPhone, while Warner Bros. Digital Distribution announced that later this month it will debut at the App Store a massively multiplayer online based on the upcoming Watchmen movie.

Alpine Racer (US$5.99) features Story Mode, which must be completed to unlock a secret character, and Time Attack, in which players compete against a "ghost" image of their best timed run. Players begin with two characters to choose from, along with another two who are unlocked along the way (not counting the secret one). They can pull off a variety of tricks as they race down the slopes. A Lite version of the game is available.

Meanwhile, Watchmen: Justice is Coming is an MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) that will launch on the iPhone and iPod touch later this month. While it's not the first of its kind (last year's Parallel Kingdom was one of the earliest, if not the first), it's the first high-profile MMOG on the platform. It's inspired by the movie opening this Friday -- the film is based on the groundbreaking graphic novel written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Dave Gibbons, and published by DC Comics.

Justice is Coming was developed by Last Legion Games, who are using their cloudMMO technology to leverage Amazon.com Web Services. Players explore a 3D New York City of the early 1970s, when superheroes have been outlawed, unless they're willing to work for the government. Crime has become rampant, leaving players to fight for survival in the Red Light District, the Financial District, Lower Manhattan, City Park, and other areas. They can chat with each other as they participate in street battles.

Pricing was not released, but Last Legion says on their site that no monthly fee will be involved after players purchase the game. They also say that the game can support up to 1,000 players at one time and will have content updates and expansion packs available in the future.

This sort of thing ticks me off. This is exactly why government regulation is a bad thing. Oh, let’s ban superheroes, how could that possibly go wrong? Well look what happens: rampant crime. I hope those clamoring for increased regulations today are paying attention.
