Apple Could Bring Biometric Security to Future Macs, iPhones

Apple has filed for a patent that could bring biometric security to future Macs and iPhones, allowing users to unlock their systems with fingerprints, a finger vein pattern, facial recognition, a retinal pattern, or other options. AppleInsider revealed details of the patent, which was published this week, noting that Apple expressed a desire to integrate the technology into the devices, "to avoid taking up the owner's time with a separate scan or consuming extra space with a distinct reader."

The iPhone could gain a forward-facing camera for this purpose, while Apple's laptops and iMacs all come with built-in webcams. A laptop's trackpad or palm rest could also be used for such a purpose.

In addition, Apple outlined non-biometric security alternatives, including tilting a device in a certain direction, tapping out a sequence or making gestures on the screen, or even matching up shapes and colors with on-screen icons.

As with all of Apple's patent filings, there is no guarantee that the new inventions will ever be incorporated into the company's products. For example, a virtual clickwheel explained in an Apple patent filing in recent years has failed to materialize, likely because the company decided to go in its current direction with touchscreen technology.

Not a good idea. Biometrics used for “identity” is fine, but using biometrics for “authentication” is a bad idea. There is no way to “revoke” your fingerprints.
