Apple, iPhone, iPod Come Out on Top for Vitrue Top Social Brands of 2008

The Vitrue 100, a gauge of the top social brands of 2008, was released on Monday with Apple's iPhone taking the top slot, Apple itself coming in third place and the iPod coming in seventh. Apple and the iPhone's ranking showed they had a stronger social presence than Disney, MTV, and even the ubiquitous Starbucks.

This criteria, which uses Vitrue's Social Media Index (SMI), is designed to capture a brand's share of the voice on the social web.

In the results, Apple and its flagship media players beat out entities such as Starbucks, MTC, Dell, Sony and Microsoft with a greater social presence.

1. iPhone

2. CNN

3. Apple

4. Disney

5. Xbox

6. Starbucks

7. iPod

8. MTV

9. Sony

10. Dell

11. Microsoft

Despite Microsoft's dominance in the operating system space, the company didn't land in the top ten, and even came in behind its own Xbox gaming console. Apple's presence in three of the top ten slots, however, shows that the company is able to maintain a strong social presence even in areas where it doesn't have a dominant market share.

The list, which compared over 2,000 popular brands, analyzes the online conversations on a variety of social networking, blogging, microblogging, photo and video sharing sites. From here, the Vitrue SMI calculates scores about the brand’s social conversations and applies a series of algorithms to reflect the frequency of usage, the size of the social media environment, and the magnitude of the conversation with the result being a single numeric score for each brand.
