Apple Job Posting Suggests Camera in Future iPod

An Apple job posting is hinting that a future iPod product -- an iPod touch update, for instance -- could have a camera in it, a feature not currently supported in any iPod. The listing, for a Camera Project Manager - iPhone, includes in its duty description responsibilities for camera development in both iPhones and iPods.

"The iPhone Engineering Group is looking for a Camera Engineering Project Manager (EPM) to drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and iPod," Apple said in its job listing, which was spotted by AppleiPhoneApps.com.

The EPM would be responsible for interfacing between Apple's internal engineers and the company's external suppliers, and Apple specified that qualified candidates needed, "a strong technical background including camera optics, sensors, actuators, manufacturing and quality control."

Apple has also placed an ad for a Camera Design Engineer - iPhone, an internal engineering position with no mention of iPods in the job description.

Apple is expected to update its iPhone product line sometime during the summer of 2009, and an iPod touch update could be in the cards, as well. On Friday, Taiwan-based newspaper DigiTimes reported that Apple had placed orders for 3.2 megapixel camera sensors for the iPhone, and 5 megapixel sensors for something not yet announced.

There's nothing even close to a guarantee that the new job postings are related to whatever product upgrade plans Apple has for the immediate future, but the two bits of news coinciding do make for interesting watercooler speculation.
