AT&T Reportedly Says New iPhone Coming, Hints at Faster Network

An unnamed source that The Boy Genius Report described as "pretty high up in AT&T's food chain" said that there will be a new iPhone announcement in June, that it will be faster than previous iPhones, and that the company is working with Apple, "to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services." The report also said the source hinted that the higher speed 7.2Mbps HSDPA network is coming.

The report also said that AT&T felt that, "customers shouldn't need to choose from AT&T's high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone."

Also described was a new iPhone app called (in theory) U-Verse that wold allow one's iPhone to act as a universal controller for your home entertainment system.

The last bit noted could be the most interesting, though it could also be a red herring. The source said that a US$99 3G netbook would go on sale this summer, and that the first one would not be a Windows OS device. Assuming there is context, that could mean it's an OS X device, but it could also run Linux or some other OS, if such a product is even real to begin with.

As with all reports attributed to unnamed sources without double confirmation, one should take this with a grain of salt, but the publication did stress that it considered the report to be "100% confirmed."

Our standard advice when approaching any rumor is that a new iPhone in your pocket is worth two on a rumor site.
