Faster Internet May be Coming to iPhone

Apple's next iPhone model may sport even faster Internet access than the current model. Unnamed sources that are apparently familiar with the iPhone roadmap made the claim, but didn't specify if that meant a speed bump for 3G wireless data access, or if the next model will support 802.11n Wi-Fi, according to Silicon Alley Insider.

The current iPhone 3G supports 802.11b and g Wi-Fi networks, so it can't take advantage of the faster data transfer speeds that 802.11n offers -- and along with the iPod touch, account for the only devices in Apple's product lineup that don't support 802.11n. The iPhone 3G also supports 3.6Mbps speeds on 3G networks, but AT&T has been working to bring 7.2Mbps speed to its subscribers some time in 2009.

Even if AT&T hasn't completed its 3G upgrade by the time new iPhone models hit the street, Apple could still include a chipset that supports the faster speeds so that users can take advantage of the performance boost once AT&T catches up.

As always, Apple won't comment on rumors and unannounced products, so until official word comes from Cupertino, analysts will be left speculating about what's really in store for the next iPhone model.

I’ll be happy with just some Incremental speed/memory increases. I’m starting to get frustrated with my first generation iPhone’s tendency to momentarily stutter when dealing with some Web sites.
I know, wah! I’m also the guy who wonders why the microwave can’t be a little faster too.

802.11n will make no difference in internet speed.
Even Verizon’s FiOS is maxed out at 15 Mbps.
802.11g is 33 Mbps.  The only way you are going to get faster speed is at places with the correct 802.11n draft standard (which Apple is not conforming to every known 802.11n router with) and a minimum of a T-3 broadband connection.  T-3s are still extremely expensive to get access to, though some colleges and universities offer it at their labs.

Some places charge as much as $3000 a month for a T-3 connection.

Probably one of the best things that apple can do to speed up the internet experience is to improve safari, and I’ll believe theoretical 3g speeds when I see them.  When 3g standards were created, it seemed that the engineers forgot that the same towers for 2g would be used, and the technology has some trouble playing nicely with itself.  In practice, my less-than-1-mbps home DSL is faster at websurfing than the iPhone on 3g.

Perhaps they’ll make it wi-max ready
