iPhone 3G: Out of Stock [Updated]

Anyone shopping for an iPhone 3G in the United States is out of luck. As of early Friday morning, all of Apple’s U.S. retail locations had run out of inventory. Update: Apple’s online availability checker began showing limited availability throughout the U.S. later in the morning.

According to Apple’s iPhone availability checker, all of its stores in the U.S. had sold out of black 8GB and 16GB models along with the white 16GB model by closing on Thursday night. Later on Friday morning, however, the availability Web page was showing that while the iPhone 3G is sold out in many stores, there is limited availability throughout the country.

It is possible that Apple is flushing and re-updating the contents of its database during the period when most of its retail stores are closed, or the company could be attempting to hamper third-party iPhone tracking Web sites. Regardless of the reasons behind the periodic nation-wide unavailability indications, the reliability of Apple’s own availability data is in question, making it even more important to call your local Apple Store to confirm the inventory status before making the trip to buy a new iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 3G has been difficult to come by in many markets since its July 11 launch, and with the company’s pending August 22 roll out into an additional 20 countries, it may be even harder to find in the coming weeks. Apple executives, however, seem comfortable that the company can meet consumer demand.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CFO, told investors during the company’s third quarter earnings report that he is comfortable with production ramp-up and thinks that Apple will be able to meet the demand.

"I am very pleased with the production ramp, very pleased with the trajectory of it. We’re shipping units as fast as we can and obviously we’re trying to catch the demand and serve our customers," Mr. Cook said. "We are confident enough in the production ramp that we will be launching about 20 additional countries on August 22."

Apple may be shipping iPhones as fast as it can, but for now it isn’t fast enough to meet the demand. Hopefully Mr. Cook isn’t overly optimistic and the Cupertino-based company will be able to meet the needs of today’s customers before doubling the number of countries the iPhone is offered in come August. If not, Apple could see customer patience start to wear thin.
