iPhone Patent Plaintiff Convicted of Health Care Fraud

The owner of a keyboard-related patent suing Apple for infringement over the iPhone is currently appealing a health care fraud conviction. InformationWeek reported Monday that Dr. Peter V. Boesen, the holder of the patent and the owner of SP Technologies, was recently sentenced to 51 months in a federal penitentiary for defrauding Iowa’s medicare and Medicaid systems by filing false claims.

In addition to the prison sentence, Dr. Boesen was ordered to repay the state of Iowa and private insurers some $900,000. He is currently free while he appeals the case.

As we reported earlier today, Dr. Boesen is suing Apple for unspecified damages, saying the company’s virtual iPhone keyboard violates a patent held under SP Technologies. InformationWeek also reported that Dr. Boesen has filed a number of other patent-infringement lawsuits through SP Technologies in the past, including suits against Canon, LG Electronics, and Kyocera.
