iPhone Software 1.1.3: Ready for New Apps
Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apples iPhone Software Update 1.1.3 did more than add location finding and enhance the home screen. It also prepped the combination iPod and smart phone for third party applications, according to cre.ations.net.
Based on the efforts of Nate True, it appears that after installing iPhone Software Update 1.1.3, the SpringBoard no longer needs to be modified to show extra applications, applications run under the "mobile" user instead of "root," and preferences are stored in /var/mobile instead of /var/root.
"What does this all mean? Ill tell you what it means. The iPhone 1.1.3 firmware is ready for official installable applications," Mr. True said.
He added that that the frameworks received many changes that will make it easier for developers write iPhone applications, and the SpringBoard application gained Widget support.
