iPod Accessories Market Begins to Mature
Thursday, January 12th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Brad Cook
What started as a gold rush for both new and existing companies has now become a competitive, mature marketplace. iPod accessories were a novelty in recent years, but now they're the norm, says CNET reporter Ina Fried, who wrote in an article published Friday that even convenience stores and "some of the world's priciest boutiques" have gotten in on the action."
Digital Lifestyle Outfitters (DLO) director of marketing Brian Baucom told Ms. Fried that "the bar has been raised," noting that while his company at one time had little competition, now it has over 200 companies vying against it for iPod owners' dollars.
Ms. Fried pointed out that NPD Research Group saw the iPod accessories market reach US$850 million last year, not counting sales over the Internet. NPD analyst Stephen Baker told her that sales of iPod gear could double this year, thanks to continued strong sales of the MP3 player.
Apple is also involved in the accessories game to a certain extent, but the company's "Made for iPod" program, which certifies that products are compatible with the iPod's dock connector, is where Mr. Baker sees them "taking their pound of flesh." Apple charges a fee for the program.
