iPod May Be the PlayStation Portable’s Biggest Threat

The biggest competition to Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) may be Apple's new video capable iPod, according to an article from Game Industry. The PlayStation Portable is a gaming device, but it's also a handheld media system, and that's a market where Apple has already proven itself.

Apple's strength is in its software. iTunes 6 makes it easy for anyone to find and add content to their iPod, whether it's music, podcasts, or video content like television shows and video podcasts. By contrast, PSP users have to use a mixture of third party applications to encode and copy video content to their handheld game device.

The iTunes music store is a service that Sony currently can't match. Unless Sony can build a software and service model that rivals Apple, it may fall behind in the handheld media race.
