iPod Museum Tours Becoming Popular

Many museums are offering audio files that visitors can download to an iPod or other MP3 player and use to take their own tours of the exhibits. Robin Dowden of Minneapolis' Walker Art Center, which offers both downloads and preloaded iPods for visitors to borrow, told the Detroit Free Press: "It's the wave of the future."
Previously, many museums provided the hardware for self-guided tours, charging up to US$10 per visitor. Other locations now offering iPod audio tours include the Smithsonian American Art Museum, San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art and de Young Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The article noted that unofficial tours are also appearing, such as art critic Lee Siegel's tour of the most overrated and underrated works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which appeared at Slate.com.
