iPod Video Conversion Utility Podner Searches For a New Name

Splasm Software on Tuesday announced that it needs a new name for its iPod video conversion utility Podner and will give away free registrations for the software in exchange for the five suggestions it likes best.

The company announced the contest in light of two e-mails it received last week from Apple, which since last year has been clamping down on iPod-related products and Web sites that use "iPod" or even "pod" in their names. For example, iPod Lounge last year changed its name to iLounge. Apple claims that such usage is a trademark violation.

Splasm's Keith Gugliotto said in a statement: "We don't see more than a passing family resemblance, but we can't say we blame [Apple]. 'Podner' is an awfully popular iPod video conversion tool and if we were Apple we might circle the wagons round little bits and pieces of our trademark, too."

The company is taking suggestions for the new name in a discussion forum thread.
