iPod and iTunes Good News for Broadcast Television

Broadcasters and advertisers are optimistic about the potential for commercial free television shows available through the iTunes Music Store, according to a TVWeek story. Downloadable versions of TV shows have the potential to drive up viewership of prime time broadcast shows, and paid product placement in shows may rise, too.

The Video on Demand (VOD) market, which Apple is positioned to dominate, has the potential to draw new viewers to serialized programs like "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," since it's easier to catch up on plot lines. The more viewers a show has, the greater the value of product placement.

Rino Scanzoni, chief investment officer at Mediaedge:cia commented "The more opportunity you give people to stay with it and stay engaged, the larger your overall audience is going to be, so I think it's actually positive for the broadcast advertiser."

The new iPod is a great platform for delivering television shows, although the screen is seen by some as too small for feature length movies. The portability makes it easy for viewers to carry their favorite shows with them, and view later when it's convenient.

The commercial free status of VOD programming could eventually change, however. As the medium changes, advertisers may push for some type of basic advertising, possibly 15 or 30 second spots before a show.
