iPod/iTMS Combo Wins ‘Can’t We All Just Get Along?’ Award

Newsweek writer Steven Levy, irritated by the impending Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD format war, issued his first ever "Can’t We All Just Get Along?" awards this week. Second place went to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who won’t allow songs purchased on the iTunes Music Store to work on any MP3 player other than the iPod, in addition to refusing to support the iPod’s ability to play music downloaded from other online stores.
Noting that Mr. Jobs has said users aren’t asking for such compatibility, Mr. Levy wrote: "Take my word for it, Steve -- when people pay for music, they want it to be playable on any device they choose."
Third prize went to the Sirius and XM satellite radio services, which are incompatible with each other and offer different exclusive programming, while first prize was awarded to America Online "for shamefully maintaining AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) as a closed system."
