iRiver Teams with Microsoft and MTV
Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Reigncom, the maker of iRiver portable MP3 players, is teaming up with Microsoft and MTV in an attempt to take market share from the iPod and iTunes Music Store (iTMS). Reigncoms new Clix multimedia player is a Flash-based device capable of playing music, videos and showing photos. It uses Microsofts Windows Media Player 11 technology, and integrates with MTVs Urge subscription-based music service, according to CNET News.
The company is hoping that its new products and lower prices will lure consumers away from the ubiquitous iPod. Frank Lim, Reigncoms director of marketing and planning for the iRiver product line, commented "iRivers used to be pricey. Now, we want our products to be something more friendlier, cute, easy to buy."
The all too familiar litany of MP3 player manufacturers teaming with Microsoft and a music download service appears on a regular basis, and so far none of these alliances have impacted Apples market share. Despite the relatively good reviews iRiver products have received, its unlikely that they can offer the tight integration and ease of use found in the iPod/iTMS package.
