iTMS Estimator Guesses Next Prize-Winning Milestone Sale

On the heels of yesterday's announcement that Apple is counting down to half billion songs sold on the iTunes Music Store (iTMS), shareware developer Jonathan Nathan on Wednesday released the freeware utility iTMS Estimator. The application shows the number of songs sold on the iTMS and estimates when the store will hit the next 100,000 sales interval, at which time Apple will give away an iPod mini and an iTMS gift card for 50 tunes to the customer who makes that purchase.

When Apple reaches half a billion songs sold, the person who downloads that tune will receive 10 iPods of their choice, an iTMS gift card for 10,000 songs and an all-expenses paid trip for four to see a Coldplay concert. Mr. Nathan's application uses the same data source as the counter on Apple's iTunes page, but it beeps once a second when there are 10 seconds left until the next milestone sale. He noted, however, that "if Apple changes this source data format, this application will break." Mac OS X v10.2 or higher is required.
