iTunes Nabs Exclusive Elton John Back Catalog for UK

Apple has nabbed a deal with Sir Elton John that brings the pop-pianist’s back catalog to iTunes UK exclusively, according to UTV. The media outlet reported that the offering will span some 400 songs covering Sir Elton’s career, as well some video offerings like "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart," performed in all its 70’s glory with Kiki Dee.

"I’ve wanted my music to be available for digital download worldwide for some time, but I knew that the entire catalogue - not just the hits - needed care and attention to be released in this way," Sir Elton said in a statement. "Now that it’s happening, I’m pleased for the fans’ sake."

He added, "The world has certainly changed since Philips Records issued my first single on seven-inch vinyl - 39 years ago this month."

For those interested in paying substantially more for their songs, UTV also reported that many Elton John tunes will be made available as mobile phone ringtones.

Sir Elton’s songs will come to iTunes on March 26th, 2007 and be exclusively available through Apple until April 30th, after which it will presumably come to other online services.

It should be noted that this material is already available on iTunes in the U.S., where one can find several hundred songs and 39 albums under Elton John. The "back catalog" deal, however, coincides with a new compilation album to be called Rocket Man to be released in the UK, where much of Sir Elton’s material has not yet been available on download services.

[Update: An Apple spokesperson clarified for iPodObserver.com that the deal with Sir Elton is UK-centric, and the story has been updated accordingly. - Editor]
