Imagination’s Multi-Core Processor Could Power Next-Gen iPhone

Imagination Technologies' new multi-core processor, dubbed the PowerVX SGX543, could conceivably find its way to a future iPhone, given the fact that the company manufactures the PowerVR MBX chip used in the 3G iPhone. Both Apple and Intel have invested in the firm, noted The Register, which was on hand for the new product's unveiling on Tuesday.

The SGX543 can scale from two to sixteen cores with all management handled by the hardware, so developers won't need to make changes to their driver software or applications. "The PowerVX SGX543 has four pipelines, so a 16-core PowerVR SGX543MP - imaginatively named the PowerVR SGX543MP16 - will have 64. In graphics-processing terms, that's one hell of a lot of concurrent pixel and vertex shading," The Register noted.

The processors are expected to find their way not only into smartphones but also into other mobile devices and various vehicles. Apple has not publicly stated its plans for the next iteration of the iPhone, but, given past history and the recent announcement of iPhone software 3.0 this summer, a new iPhone could be unveiled during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will likely be held sometime between May and July in San Francisco.
