Jon Rubinstein Takes Over as Palm CEO
Thursday, June 11th, 2009 at 9:48 AM - by Jeff Gamet
Palm CEO Ed Colligan is stepping down to make way for former Apple iPod man Jon Rubinstein. Mr. Rubinstein was heavily involved in the development of the original iPod, and after joining Palm in 2006 was instrumental in helping guide the design for the new Pre smart phone, too.
"I am very excited about taking on this expanded role at Palm," commented Mr. Rubinstein. "Ed and I have worked very hard together the past two years, and I'm grateful to him for everything he's done to help set the company up for success."
He added "Due in no small part to Ed's courageous leadership, we're in great shape to get Palm back to continuous growth, and we plan to keep the trajectory going upward."
Palm has been seen by many in recent years as a waning company that no longer builds relevant products in comparison to RIM's Blackberry, and now Apple's iPhone. Once Mr. Rubinstein joined the company, however, there was speculation that the company could regain what they viewed as a lost focus.
With the launch of the Palm Pre on June 6, the company sent a message that it still plans to be a player in the competitive smart phone market. Like Apple's iPhone line, the Palm Pre offers a multi-touch keyboard, support for third-party applications, and a host of built-in apps for managing email and contacts, scheduling, and Web browsing.
While the Palm Pre may help breathe life back into the company, Mr. Rubinstein likely has a long road ahead to return the company to its former glory.
