Mossberg: New iPhone at WWDC
Thursday, June 4th, 2009 at 8:40 AM - by Jeff Gamet
Adding more validity to the current batch of rumors, The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg is claiming Apple will unveil new iPhone models during the World Wide Developer Conference on June 8. He also implied that the new models will be more than incremental upgrades by saying they "will have lots of added features."
Mr. Mossberg included the iPhone foreshadowing in his Palm Pre review, where he said Palm's smartphone -- due out on June 6 -- is a worthy contender to Apple's combination iPod and smartphone. "Whether the Pre is better than the iPhone depends on your personal preferences, though I'd note that the new iPhone to be unveiled next week will have lots of added features that could alter those calculations," he said.
The Pre is seen by many as Palm's last chance at staying in the smartphone game, and as the first device that can compete head-on with the iPhone. It sports a multi-touch interface, slide out keyboard, the ability to run multiple apps at the same time, built-in Wi-Fi, and more.
Palm's Pre will make it into customer's hands before the new iPhone, and it will offer features that aren't available on the current iPhone 3G. That lead, however, may be short lived if Mr. Mossberg's predictions are accurate.
