Pangea Drops Mac Platform for iPhone as Enigmo Earns $1.5 Million

Calling the money his company earned developing games for the Mac "lunch money" in comparison to its iPhone sales, Pangea Software CEO Brian Greenstone said in an interview he was dropping the Mac in favor of full time iPhone development.

Mr. Greenstone made the comments in an interview with The Guardian UK at Austin's SxSW conference. Noting that they started iPhone app development "for fun," he said, "the next thing you know, these apps are making the Mac stuff look like a joke. The Mac stuff is like lunch money compared to what the iPhone does."

He also said that the iPhone was a more entertaining platform to develop for, and noted that his company's success was helped by getting "a lot of love from Apple." Enigmo, which sold some 800,000 copies at US$2.99 each since June of 2008, benefitted from premier placement on the App Stores, and Cro-Mag Rally was featured in Apple CEO Steve Jobs's keynote presentation introducing third-party apps.

Mr. Greenstone talked up the iPhone as a gaming platform, with his sole complaint being the lack of buttons."We've had to try different schemes, and it's been difficult, it's the one flaw. Other than that, it's got the horse power, it's got the memory, it has the graphics, the sound...and it's certainly got the installed base. It's a real gaming platform, it just lacks buttons."

Pangea has been a long-loved Mac developer, with Nanosaur and Nanosaur 2 having been included with the original line of iMacs for several years. Mr. Greenstone said that most of his fellow small Mac gaming developers have continued with their Mac development, and that he hopes that Mac games won't be drying up. His company, though, is moving on to the iPhone.

His advice to other would-be iPhone millionaires is to make good looking applications, hire an artist to do real art, and do your best to get your app into the Top 100 best-selling apps at the App Store. If you can do the latter, he said, your success becomes self-perpetuating.

I’ve liked a lot of what Pangea has done on Macs but the pricing of games on iPhone/iPod touch have been much better.  Cro Mag Rally is much more fun without the keyboard.

It’s satisfying to see a Mac developer finally make money, though I’d think that they could work both platforms with some consistency.  It always seems that those who use Macs for work don’t play many games and those who want to play games choose another platform.
