RIM Turns to Ex-Apple Exec for User Experience VP

Research In Motion (RIM) has tapped former Apple executive Don Lindsay to be Vice President of User Experience, a role that he is creating, according to his LinkedIn profile. Mr. Lindsay's hiring represents a notching up of the battle between Apple and RIM in the smartphone wars, with him bringing ten years of experience at Apple to the BlackBerry maker.

While at Apple, Mr. Lindsay said he, "Led the Mac OS X interface concept project and directed the Design team responsible for the User Experience for Mac OS X 10.0-10.3 including first generation iLife applications."

He also, "Contributed to every Mac OS release from 8.0 through 10.3. Joined Apple in '94 to focus on Speech UX."

On the less-bright side, Mr. Lindsay's resume also includes time spent developing user experience aspects of Windows Vista. According to his profile, he was, "Lured to Microsoft to lead future Windows UX explorations. Ended up contributing key Vista UX including; AERO Glass and SKU/hardware tiering strategy, Glass Colorization, Flip3D, Alt-tab, window animations, Windows Calendar and more.'

Coverage from mainstream publications like the Washington Post have suggested it was his time at Apple that likely his biggest selling point for RIM, though throughout his career he has been named as an inventor in 40 different utility and design patents.
