Rumor: Next iPhone May Include Digital Compass

Leaked images showing a compass feature in the upcoming iPhone Software 3.0 debugging screens could mean Apple's next hardware update for its combination iPod and smartphone will include a magnetometer, or digital compass, according to Boy Genius Report.
If the rumors prove to be true, including a digital compass in the next iPhone could let developers design applications that offer more detailed directions when walking or driving, or make new orienteering-style games.
The leaked screen shots show an option for disabling the compass feature, likely a move to help preserve battery life, or potentially to let users that are concerned about privacy issues mask their current location.
Apple doesn't talk about unannounced products, so until the company reveals the next iPhone model the inclusion of a digital compass is just a rumor. With the amount of information that is apparently leaking out about the next iPhone, it seems fairly likely that it will include a magnetometer.
