T-Mobile Plans Android Home Phone, Tablet Computer
Monday, April 6th, 2009 at 4:07 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
T-Mobile is planning on releasing both a tablet computer and a home phone that run Android, Google's smartphone operating system, according to "confidential documents" obtained by The New York Times. The newspaper said the products would be released early in 2010, and if so, would join T-Mobile's G1, or Dream, the first Android smartphone on the market.
The home phone would be designed to work with a landline, and would plug into a docking station. The Times said it would come with another, unspecified device that would handle data synchronization and battery recharging.
Details on the tablet were not included, but stories about smartphone-based netbooks and small tablets have been making the news rounds for some time. For instance, The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Apple would be releasing a touch-screen netbook in the third quarter of 2009, a device that could well be an iPhone-OS based iPod product.
In the meanwhile, other manufacturers in the cellphone space have announced or committed to Android-based products in the future. If the Times' article is correct, however, the landline home phone and tablet computer would be among the first non-smartphone devices based on Android to hit the market.
