Netflix Looking to Expand Online Presence
Monday, March 24th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Netflix has surveyed its customers to gauge their interest in streaming movies to their TV using Microsofts Xbox 360, according to Reuters on Tuesday. The move is another in a series of initiatives as Netflix seeks to expand and solidify its online business model.
Steve Swasey, a Netflix spokesperson, confirmed the survey but declined to affirm that this meant a potential partnership with Microsoft. However, he did say that Netflix is interested in delivering movies to consumers "in as many ways as possible."
Back in January, Netflix said it would enter a partnership with LG electronics to produce a set top box to which they could stream movies.
Netflix customers already have the option to select movies for instant streaming to their Windows PC. Macintosh users have been waiting for an equivalent service, but Netflx has not delivered it. Instead, Netflix is looking to embrace Xbox 360 owners while it develops its own set top box with LG.
Netflix knows that the days of mailing physical, plastic discs via the U.S. mail are numbered, and theyre looking to the future. The verdict on whether their vision is 20/20 and whether theyll eventually embrace Mac users online is still out.
