PC Magazine: iPhone is a "Lousy Phone"

The iPhone makes for a lousy phone, according to an in-depth review published by PC Magazine. The review piled praise onto the iPhone as an iPod ("best iPod ever"), an Internet device, its great design, and more, but said that poor voice quality, poor signal strength, and missing features found standard on other devices made for a very poor phone.

"It’s a marvelous iPod. No one will miss the scroll wheel, despite the fact that it was once the greatest tactile control panel ever designed," wrote Sascha Segan and Tim Gideon, "but it’s just a plain lousy phone."

The reviewers put the iPhone through extensive testing, and found their unit to perform poorly in the area of voice quality and signal strength. They also criticized the iPhone for not having tactile feedback for dialing, a feature found in some Japanese-made touchscreen phones. While the voice quality and signal strength issues they cite run contrary to this reporter’s own experience, it should be noted that their tests were fairly in-depth.

Other areas of praise include:

  • Display quality (gorgeous)
  • The multitouch controls
  • Great Web browser
  • The YouTube browser
  • The way in which all of the features in the iPhone work together
  • The Interface

Other areas of criticism:

  • GSM buzz on speakers
  • Poor support for business e-mail
  • Virtual keyboard (hard to type on it)

The reviewers gave it 4 out of 5 starts.
