Microsoft Hints at iPhone Rival for June

Microsoft's Office 2010 development team dropped a big hint that Big Redmond is preparing to take on the iPhone in June. The group didn't offer any details, but did imply that Microsoft is preparing to launch a Zune-based smartphone.

The Office 2010 development team revealed the news on Twitter with the comment "June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers," and the followup tweet "New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre."

The team's comments seem to contradict Microsoft's stance that it isn't building its own smartphone and is instead teaming other companies in a similar fashion to Google and its Android platform. If Microsoft really isn't preparing to launch its own smartphone to compete with the iPhone and upcoming Palm Pre, the company could also be planning on licensing its Zune platform to third-party developers, just as it has done with other technologies.

Microsoft's Zune lineup has been something of a disappointment compared to the success of Apple's iPod. If Microsoft is planning on releasing a smartphone based on the Zune platform next month, Apple's biggest competition will likely come from Palm and RIM instead.

Microsoft is apparently a company that has never learned when to cut its losses.

I predict that it will be every bit as successful as the Zune music player.  *squirt*

This is huge. The Zune Phone promises to do to the iPhone what the Zune did to the iPod.
