Apple Offers Unlocked iPhone 3G in Hong Kong for $695

Breaking with its strategy in most other countries, Apple is offering unlocked iPhone 3Gs in the Hong Kong market for HK$5400 (US$695.10) for the 8GB model and HK$6200 ($798.10) for the 16GB model. The phones, "can be activated with any wireless carrier," according to the company’s Web site.

"Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation," the site also said.

In most countries, Apple has chosen to work with a single carrier, offering iPhone 3G units at subsidized prices -- US$199 for the 8GB unit purchased from Apple or AT&T -- with the iPhones locked to that carrier.

Even in countries like France, where Orange is required to offer an unlocked version of the iPhone to satisfy consumer protection laws, Apple works with its chosen carrier to sell the iPhone. In the French market, an unlocked 8GB iPhone is priced at €509 ($730.57), while a 16Gb unit will cost €609 ($873.79).

In contrast, Apple is offering Hong Kong customers the iPhone directly to consumers at the unsubsidized and unlocked price.
