- Wolfmother
Black Sabbath, The White Stripes, The Stooges. There aren't many bands worth their salt that want to be compared to other bands, but when I listen to Wolfmother's self-titled American debut, I can't help but be reminded of those three other bands. [...] - Bryan Chaffin
- Belle & Sebastian
The Life Pursuit is a sort of Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. You get Belle & Sebastian's peanut butter (its wistful, often irresistible pop) dipped in a 'Have A Nice Day!' and glam 70s chocolate. Although I'm guessing that most Belle & Sebastian [...] - Robyn Weisman

AT&T has had a recent on-again, off-again affair with a free Wi-Fi plan for iPhone users at more than 17,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots. AT&T's latest iPhone plan page no longer mentions the offer, and AT&T isn't commenting. ...more...

Synchronoss Takes Hit Despite iPhone Deal
Thursday, May 8th, 2008 at 10:45 AM - by
Synchronoss looks to be in a great position because it's the company that manages the process of activating iPhones on AT&T's network, but it recently lowered its sales and earnings forcasts, and says Apple's combination iPod and smart phone is to blame. ...more...

- Mophie Juice Pack
- Mophie, US$99.95
- According to Mophie, the Juice Pack iPhone battery extender provides an additional 250 hours of standby time, 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of internet use, 7 hours of video playback, and/or 24 hours of audio playback. After using this puppy for close to a month, I can't confirm that those numbers are 100% accurate, but my gut feeling is that they're not far off the mark. Before I started using the Juice Pack I had to recharge my iPhone every single night, and even then it occasionally ran out of "juice" before dinnertime or not long after. Now, with a fully-charged Mophie Juice Pack, I've gone as long as three days between recharges! That rocks.
- Hands-Free Mic & Earbuds for iPhone
- Newer Technology, US$19.99
- The Hands-Free Mic & Earbuds for iPhone by Newer Technology is a decent replacement for the stock iPhone headset included with every iPhone. With a list price 33% lower than the Apple iPhone Stereo Headset (the stock headset's "real" name), it's almost a no-brainer if you need to replace your iPhone headset, or even if you just prefer black over white.
- Mic Extender Cable for iPhone
- Newer Technology, US$14.99
- The Mic Extender Cable by Newer Technology is an ingenious little device that combines a short cable and a microphone to allow you to use your favorite stereo headphones as your iPhone headset. Of course you can use your favorite stereo headphones with your iPhone without this device, but you will probably need a $5 or $10 adapter to allow the plug to fit into the iPhone's recessed headset port. And, of course, if you use your favorite stereo headphones with your iPhone without this device, you can use them to listen to music or video, but you'll have to unplug them to talk on the phone.
- Apple iPhone Stereo Headset
- Apple, Inc., US$29.00
- I consider very few Apple products mediocre but I can't think of anything nicer to call Apple's earphones and headsets. The Apple iPhone Stereo Headset, which features the same crappy earphones included with every iPod, is mediocre at best. Among the least comfortable earphones I've ever used, they provide so-so frequency response, and little or no noise rejection. Furthermore, unlike some other earphones that come with foam or silicone tips in several sizes, the Apple iPhone Stereo Headset (and iPod earphones) come in one size and one size only. If your ears aren't exactly that size you're out of luck.
- Tango X2 iPod speaker system
- XtremeMac, US$149.95
- Xtreme Mac's Tango X2, the successor to their well-regarded but now discontinued Tango iPod speaker system (which I reviewed here last year), is a worthy successor, improved in many ways but still reasonably-priced. While I would argue with Xtreme Mac's billing it as, "the most full featured iPod home stereo system on the market," I have to admit it's a great sounding system with a respectable feature set for the price.
- Jensen Banshee JiSS-550 Docking Speaker Station for iPod
- Spectra Merchandising Intl. Inc., US$100
- The Jensen Banshee JiSS-550 Docking Speaker Station for iPod sports several desirable features and sounds better than most iPod speaker systems in its price range (under $100 on the street).
- Texas Hold 'em (iPod game)
- Apple, Inc., US$4.99
- Texas Hold 'em is a poker game for iPods of recent vintage (i.e. 3rd generation iPod nano, iPod classic, and 5th generation iPod). Unfortunately, it's also one of the least enjoyable iPod games I have purchased to date as well as one of the most mediocre poker simulations I've played on any platform.
- iceBar2 iPod nano Case & Speaker System
- Atlantic, Inc., US$79.99
- iceBar2, from Atlantic, Inc., is an integrated iPod case and miniature speaker system for all three generations of iPod nano. But it's a nano case and speaker system with a nifty twist -- the whole kit and kaboodle is waterproof.
- The Sims Bowling
- Apple, Inc., US$4.99
- As you surely know, last week was spring break for most school kids. In our family that means at least a dozen hours spent on airplanes and in airports. So before we took off I stocked my iPod Classic with a couple of new games -- The Sims Bowling (reviewed here) and Texas Hold 'em (review coming soon). The Sims Bowling turned out to be more fun than I expected.
- mStation 2.1 Stereo Tower
- mStation, US $299.95
- The mStation 2.1 Stereo Tower is a floor standing iPod docking station/speaker system that's fabricated in high-tech extruded aluminum. At nearly four feet tall and clad in a high-tech silver and black matte finish, there's no middle ground when it comes to this system's looks : you either love 'em or you hate 'em.
