Blu-ray is Taking Sales Lead Over HD DVD
Tuesday, March 6th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
New sales data from Nielsen VideoScan shows that Blu-ray movies have 60 percent of the HD movie market since January. Digital Trends posted the news on Wednesday.
VideoScan data showed that HD DVD sales were ahead of Blu-ray in late 2006. This has been ascribed to the lower cost of HD DVD players. However, starting near Christmas 2006, Blu-ray sales started pulling ahead. Since January, movies on Blu-ray have been outselling HD DVD titles by about two to one.
The change appears to have come about the time of the introduction of Sonys PS3 game console. Studio support has also been important. MGM, 20th Century Fox, Disney, and Sony are releasing their titles exclusively in Blu-ray format. Paramount and Warner are covering their bets, releasing their titles in both formats.
In related stories, Disneys CEO Bob Iger told the 2007 Bear Stearns Media Conference that the HDTV DVD business will not take off until a clear winner emerges. Phillip Swann of TVPredictions.com said, "it wouldnt surprise me if the Toshiba-supported HD-DVD high-def DVD format throws in the towel by years end. Blu-ray has the momentum now and I think everyone is starting to see that, including Toshiba."
