Bray: iPhone is Great, Not Perfect

Despite the well deserved praise Apple’s iPhone is receiving, it isn’t a perfect device. The Boston Globe’s Hiawatha Bray thinks the combination iPod and smartphone is cool, but there are a couple of flaws that will keep him from being an early adopter.

Topping his list of problems, Mr. Bray points out that even though the iPhone does support Microsoft Outlook on Windows, it doesn’t do it very well. The iPhone doesn’t consistently or reliably sync with outlook, leaving some users with incomplete contact lists on their iPhone. Since is a very popular application for Windows users, that is an issue Apple needs to address sooner instead of later.

The iPhone doesn’t include a GPS. While Global Position Systems have been popular for some time as stand-alone location finders and mapping aids, they have also become increasingly popular in smartphones. Since that is a feature the iPhone doesn’t offer, it can’t be used to figure out where you are. Instead, users take advantage of the iPhone’s impressive Google Maps support -- which assumes you already know where you are.

The slower EDGE data network the iPhone uses means that uses may have to put up with sluggish Web pages and slow email download speeds. Since Apple apparently didn’t include 3G chips in the iPhone, that means current owners will likely have to buy new models when AT&T is ready to move iPhone customers to the faster data network.

Despite his gripes, Mr. Bray still thinks the iPhone is a great product. "Its flaws are mostly rookie mistakes, the kind of bungles you’d have found in, say, the original iPod or Macintosh computer," he said. "They’ll be set right in a couple of years, even as mass production drives down the iPhone’s cost."

Until then, Mr. Bray will stick with his old smartphone, and patiently wait for iPhone 2.0.
