An Evening with George Shearing & Mel Torm

PC World Reliability Survey Gives High Marks to iPod, Apple Laptops
Wednesday, December 14th, 2005 at 2:00 PM - by Brad Cook
PC World magazine has released the results of its 2006 Reliability & Service Survey, which showed Apple scoring Average in the desktop category, where no company was rated Better Than Average, and Better Than Average for laptops, where it shared the ranking with Lenovo, which owns IBM's former PC business.
Apple also topped the MP3 player category, where the iPod scored Average in all criteria and Better Than Average for ease of use and satisfaction with reliability. Only iRiver earned a Better Than Average score -- for overall problems -- but that was offset by a Worse Than Average score for ease of use.
Apple's AirPort Extreme wasn't included in the ratings for the wireless router category.
PC World detailed a fair amount of frustration with Dell on the part of its readers, with many complaining about not being able to understand tech support employees who spoke with thick accents. The company has also cut its standard warranty for low-end PCs from one year to 90 days. In contrast, the magazine cited a situation where Apple fixed a problem with an iBook's display even though the machine was out of warranty.
The article also detailed reliability and service results for the makers of many computer peripherals and other devices, such as digital cameras. PC World surveyed 35,000 subscribers between May 1 and Aug. 1, 2005, limiting respondents to discussions of hardware that was three years old or newer.
