Yahoo! Japan Dumps Sony’s Mora for iTunes Store
Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Yahoo! Japan dropped Sonys Mora online music store Thursday in a deal that makes Apples iTunes Store in Japan the default music store. The IDG News Service reported that Mora will still be available to Yahoo! Japan members that log in and actively change their default back to Mora, but that the iTunes Store will otherwise be the music store available to the 40 million Japanese Internet surfers who use Yahoo! Japan.
Mora is an online service operated by Sonys LabelGate subsidiary. It was among the first services to launch in Japan, but has been criticized for its onerous DRM restrictions. That said, the Japanese market is the one market where Sonys Walkman digital media device has competed well against Apples iPod.
IDG noted that Yahoo! Japan has Softbank Corp. as its largest shareholder, with Yahoo! itself the number two shareholder with 1/3 ownership. That difference between Yahoo! Japan and the companys U.S. branch means that this deal is not likely to herald similar deals in the U.S., where Yahoo! manages its own music download service.
