Apple Buying Up 3.2 Megapixel Camera Chips for New iPhone

Apple is apparently snapping up 3.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor chips intended for the next version of the iPhone built-in camera. The Cupertino-based company is purchasing the chips from Omnivision, and is also buying up 5 megapixel CMOS chips for another product due out later this year, according to DigiTimes.

If the DigiTimes sources are correct, Apple could be releasing a new iPhone model soon that sports a feature many users have been asking for since the handheld first hit store shelves: a higher resolution digital camera.

Since the 3.2 megapixel chips appear to be destined for the next iPhone model update, the 5 megapixel could be intended for a different product, or possibly for yet another iPhone model that's due out later in the year.

Of course, DigiTimes doesn't have the best track record for new product information, so take their report with an appropriately sized grain of salt.
