iPhone 1.1.3 Jailbreak In the Wild

Apple released iPhone Software Update 1.1.3 just a little over a week ago during Macworld Expo 2008, and the creative minds behind the iPhone Dev Team didn’t waste any time coming up with a jailbreak procedure for the new software. Like prior jailbreak methods that let users add extra applications to their iPhone, this one is not authorized by Apple, and will likely break with future software update releases.

This new jailbreak requires a previously jailbroken iPhone with software version 1.1.2 installed, so a little pre-planning is necessary. That means iPhones with software version 1.1.3 already installed will have to be downgraded before starting the procedure.

iPhone Software Update 1.1.3 added several new features to the combination iPod and smart phone including location finding and group sms support, but under the hood it also made the changes necessary to add additional (presumably Apple approved) third-party applications.

Despite the added support for third-party apps, until Apple releases the iPhone and iPod touch software developer kit in February the only way to install extra applications is by first jailbreaking the device. Once Apple officially supports third-party iPhone and iPod touch applications, however, jailbreaking may no longer be necessary.

Instructions for jailbreaking the iPhone for software version 1.1.3, along with the necessary files, is available at the cre.ations.net Web site.
